- Summary of content: This presentation will focus on reviewing the normal anatomy of the sacroiliac joints and its normal variants and how to interpret / understand the appearance of sacroiliitis on various imaging studies such as radiographs, CT and MRI.
- Learning objectives:
- Review the normal anatomy of the sacroiliac joints and some normal variants
- Highlight the advantages and limitations between different imaging techniques
- Review the imaging findings of sacroiliitis on radiograph, CT and MRI studies
- Review the common and less common differential diagnosis of sacroiliitis
- Key points:
- Various imaging techniques are available to assess the sacroiliac joint and each study has their advantages and limitations
- The ASAS classification criteria for axial spondyloarthropathies should be used if you suspect that your patient has an axial spondyloarthropathy.
- The modified New York grading criteria can help you diagnose a sacroiliitis if it has bilateral changes corresponding to grade 2 or more, or unilateral changes corresponding to grade 3 or more.
- Various MRI findings can be seen to help you diagnose a sacroiliitis, but those findings must be clearly present and located in a typical anatomical area.
- Various differential diagnosis exists when you see a sacroiliitis, make sure you know what the distribution is to help you narrow your list.
