Treating the Older Adult: Preparing for the “Silver Tsunami”

This innovative and practical weekend seminar will present an overview of unique aspects of treating the older adult. It will include a discussion on the importance of history taking in the potentially cognitively impaired older adult. In addition we will discuss the importance and practical logistics of asking “systems based questions” that may be difficult in this complex population. We will also review the unique physical examination considerations in the older adult and also expound on our experience from the unique nursing home environment. We will then discuss the unique challenges of developing an appropriate assessment/differential diagnosis. In addition we will also talk about co-morbid and complicating psychosocial factors (especially important is the fear avoidance). Finally we will spend time talking about practical solutions to treatment in this population specifically considerations including the role of SMT in the older adult, including the frail older adult.

Paul Dougherty, DC, DABCO is a 1990 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He was in private practice for 12 years in Upstate NY. He practiced in an interdisciplinary practice setting and was one of the first chiropractors in NY State to receive hospital privileges. In 2003 he left private practice to direct the New York Chiropractic College’s clinic at the Monroe Community Hospital, a university affiliated teaching nursing home. In 2005 he joined the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Canandaigua NY. He has continued to actively participate in patient care and clinical research. He has completed two federally funded randomized controlled trials and has published numerous manuscripts. He is involved in the Upstate NY Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Centre and lectures extensively on the topic of Geriatrics.
