Course Description
EVENT OUTLINE
This session will offer an update on a research project, funded by an RCC Innovation Grant, which is investigating the head neck musculature in combat athletes. It will address some of the challenges faced during this project, and future plans to develop publishable research. It will also cover the imminent research on imaging the neck musculature using MRI that should be completed by the end of August 2023.
Finally, it will also explore the role of multidisciplinary teams in managing concussion in sport. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Understand the schools of thought currently under investigation to better understand the role of the neck in preventing concussion.
2. Understand how RCC Sports Faculty funding is being used for innovative research.
3. Discuss the role of the chiropractor in managing concussion in sports MDTs
SPEAKER – Phill Heritage
Phill graduated from Aberystwyth University with a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science, Bangor University with an MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology and the University of Dundee with a PGCert in Medical Education, also achieving Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and Chartered Scientist status. Phill is currently a PhD candidate at Coventry University, researching practices and
player welfare related to concussion in football. Phill currently works as an undergraduate course leader in Sport, Exercise and Health at AECC University College in Bournemouth. He previously worked at AFC Bournemouth as a Performance Analyst, and brings experience and expertise from working as a sports physiologist and consultant, most recently with GB Snowsport, Williams Innovation and the GB
Para Nordic team in preparation for the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games, and England Beach Volleyball players in preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Phill has also led the development of occupational and personal health screening initiatives for the community and private industry. Recently this has included developing a new programme in collaboration with Dorset Police to enhance health provision for the county’s officers.
