Course Description
EVENT OUTLINE
- Principles of practical saddle fitting and saddle construction
- Rehabilitation and care of the equine spine
- Physiotherapy approach to strengthening and maintaining mobility in the equine spine and its associated musculature.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understanding of basic saddle fitting knowledge including saddle construction and faults.
- Understanding of exercise prescription and planning.
- Overview of dynamic mobilisation exercises.
- Appropriate use of poles and other equipment including tape (rigid and K-tape) and theraband.
SPEAKERS
Laurence Pearman
Laurence is a Master Saddler who undertook his saddlery apprenticeship at W G Hayes of Cirencester and is now a City & Guilds and Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) Assessor. He has BHS qualifications in horse knowledge and riding and has competed in Hunter Trials and Team Chasing, which has given him a better understanding of the performance of horse, saddle and rider. Laurence is a Fellow, former President and current member of the executive committee of the SMS, which is dedicated to improving the saddlery trade, helping to develop saddlery and saddle fitting. He is the current chairman of the south west region of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers and, in 2005, was granted the Freedom of the City of London in acknowledgement of his services to the trade.
Sonya Nightingale
Sonya qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1985, initially working in a wide variety of settings in the human field. Her veterinary physiotherapy experience dates back to 1987 when she became of the first 20 members of ACPAT. Since then she has had extensive experience as both a clinician and clinical educator. Sonya treats horses competing at all levels and works at events such as Badminton and London 2012. As Chair of ACPAT she was closely involved with the organisation and regulation of the veterinary physiotherapy profession. This role expanded to create a register, RAMP, of which she is now President.
