Speaker: Gary Clarke

Gary Clarke is the UK’s first disabled strongman and is a pioneer of the sport in this country, having organised the first Britain’s Disabled Strongman Competition. He first became involved in strongman sport in 2011, taking part in charity truck-pull events before competing in the World’s Strongest Disabled Man in Reykjavik, Iceland, where event founder Arnar Mar Jonsson inspired him to set up a national event in the UK – the first of which took place in August 2015 in Stoke-on-Trent. Gary, who was born with cerebral palsy, also has a degree in sports coaching from Yeovil College and helps to train new competitors coming into the strongman scene. He continues to work to raise the profile of disabled strongman sport in the UK and around the world.

Learning outcomes include:

  • An understanding of cerebral palsy and access to sports like strongman for disabled athletes
  • An awareness of disabled strongman sport and its future in the UK
  • An understanding of the approach to treatment for disabled athletes and injury prevention
