ECU Online Series 2021: Sports Chiropractic in Cycling

Maarten Tielen

Maarten Tielen studied at the AECC chiropractic college after graduating cum laude at Physiotherapy in the Netherlands. Afterwards he finished the FICS-course and became a registered sports chiropractor (ICCSP). He started his own clinic in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and here he treats a large range of elite athletes. He is a medical staff member for the Dutch Triathlete Federation and works with Dutch Olympic triathletes. For the past 7 years he worked with professional cyclists and was a chiropractor at a lot of cycling races and all the grand tours (including the Tour the France). First he worked for Team Sunweb (now team DSM) and since two years he is working for Team Jumbo-Visma, the world’s best cycling team of 2020.

Summary of the module

Maarten will take you into professional cycling as a sports chiropractor. He will share and discuss some cases and his experience as sports chiropractor in professional cycling with Team Sunweb and Team Jumbo- Visma. He had the honour of working with world class riders in grand tours like the Tour the France and the Giro d’ Italia. He will tell you the most common traumatic and overuse injuries in cycling and his opinion how they should be managed.

On completion of the module, you will be able to:

1. Learn the most common traumatic and overuse injuries in cycling

2. Learn to differentiate in vascular and neurological pain in the leg in cyclists
