Course Description

Active Release Techniques® Upper Extremity Level 1 offers intense training in 60 manual treatment protocols. This seminar comprises two parts: 1) an online Level 1 Introduction component and 2) a live, in-person, hands-on instruction seminar. Completion of both parts are required to obtain certification. The course is open to both English and German speakers.

Providers must complete the Level 1 Introduction as a pre-requisite to the in-person course. Level 1 Introduction is a self-paced, online training tool and is included with registration. During the introduction, providers will gain a thorough review of gross anatomy, learn ART’s diagnostic algorithm and treatment methodology, and examine patient presentations as they relate to clinical implications. The goal of the introduction is to prepare students for the hands-on portion of the seminar, so that mastering manual techniques is the primary focus during live training.

The live seminar is almost entirely hands-on and offers a small student to instructor ratio to ensure quality education.  Proficient anatomy knowledge is essential for success. Providers learn and practice manual palpation and treatment modalities to treat soft-tissue injuries and disorders of the upper extremity- hand, arm, shoulder, and neck.

ART® treatment utilizes manual techniques to move tissues and joints while under tension. The system allows for relative motion between the tissues and articulations. This seminar emphasizes treatment methods of the neuromusculoskeletal system to diagnose and correct alterations in tissue texture, tension, movement, and function between tissues. Evaluation and treatment occur simultaneously.

Learning objectives:

  1. By the end of the seminar, the provider will be able to effectively palpate and treat 60 anatomical soft-tissue structures within the upper extremity, using appropriate tension, depth, and motion to properly perform the treatment protocols.
  2. By the end of the seminar, the provider will be able to correctly move the muscle from its shortened position to elongated position.
  3. By the end of the seminar, the provider can successfully differentiate between healthy and unhealthy tissue utilizing hands-on palpation techniques.
