As the profession grew in both size and stature, the European Chiropractors Union, which has been in existence since 1932, accepted the need to differentiate its academic and research work from that of its political role. After consultation with the profession through a working party, the concept of the academy was devised.
In 2006, the General Council of the European Chiropractic Union unanimously created a post graduate academy of chiropractic which is the “academic arm” of the Union. This has absorbed, in part, the function of the ECU’s Board of Education, Professional Council and Research Council. The EAC and its National or Specialist Colleges will only accept graduates from colleges accredited by the Councils on chiropractic Education International, or through its regional representative the European Council on Chiropractic Education.

The body is called the European Academy of Chiropractic (EAC); its purpose is to act as the academic arm of its parent organisation the European Chiropractors Union (ECU). It is responsible for the academic promotion of the chiropractic profession in Europe and liaise with other academic institutions approved by the EAC.

- to provide and support postgraduate education for the European chiropractic profession based on European Council on Chiropractic Education/Copuncils on Chiropractic Education International accredited undergraduate programmes.
- to support the development and expansion of Graduate Education Programmes/Provisional Registration Training Schemes/Vocational Registration Schemes in the European chiropractic profession.
- to provide and support Continual Professional Learning in the context of professional lifelong learning within the European chiropractic profession.
- to provide a venue for the presentation of scientific and clinical papers germane to the European chiropractic profession.
- to promote and support research within the European chiropractic profession.
- to work cooperatively with institutions, organisations and foundations acceptable to the Academy, in providing postgraduate educational programmes for the benefit of the European chiropractic profession.
- to create links between the chiropractic profession and other healthcare and scientific professions.
- to foster public awareness of chiropractic postgraduate professional education on behalf of the European chiropractic profession.
- to act as an awarding institution on behalf of the European chiropractic profession.
The Academy shall be operated in furtherance of these purposes, and no other.
The Academy shall be operated to do or direct the following:
- develop and promulgate a code of ethics for its members.
- provide annual conferences, in conjunction with the European Chiropractors’ Union as a venue for the presentation of scientific and clinical papers.
- review of needs of chiropractic educational institutions in the postgraduate delivery of an academic programme, specialist or otherwise on request from that institution.
- review of needs of national associations in membership of the European Chiropractors’ Union in the development and expansion of Graduate Education Programmes/Provisional Registration Training Schemes/Vocational Registration Schemes in the European chiropractic profession.
- verification of registrant status of chiropractors applying for the Academy Membership, Fellowship, Specialist Membership and Specialist Fellowship.
- nominate candidates for the Honorary Fellowship.
- provide an appropriate certificate of associate membership of the Academy.
- provide professional equivalency in Europe, in association with the Council of Chiropractic Education International, to individuals having completed a Graduate Education Programmes/Provisional Registration Training Schemes/Vocational Registration Scheme.
- any other activities consistent with the purpose of the Academy.

The Executive officers of the Academy shall consist of the Academic Dean, the Academic Registrar, the Secretary General and the President of the European Chiropractors’ Union. The Academic Dean and Academic Registrar shall be elected from among the voting Members of Council. The position of President of the European Chiropractors' Union will maintain membership of the Council and the Secretary General shall be proposed by the European Chiropractors’ Union from the Academy’s fellows and will hold the position of Secretary of the European Chiropractors’ Union. The non-executive Members of Council shall be the Director of Academic Affairs, the Chairman of the Research Council and the Convention Director. The non-executive Members of Council shall be appointed by the initial executive and thereafter on agreement of the Council. No member of Council shall hold more than one elective office at any one time.

All Members are eligible to apply for Fellowship in the Academy and/or its Specialist and/or any National Colleges, under the auspices of the EAC. The granting of full Membership/Fellowship entitles that member to use the distinctive letters MEAC/FEAC. The level of membership will be decided on by the EAC’s Court of Electors and will be based on a criteria system set out in Article X, Section H of the EAC Bylaws.
Following the initial period whereby a Membership/Fellowship application will be accepted, elevation from Membership to Fellowship will be by portfolio only. The portfolio will demonstrate either academic achievement or standing within the chiropractic community. Membership and Fellowship fees will be used to offset costs incurred and ensure EAC services are of the highest standards.

At the inauguration of the academy Founding Fellows (FFEAC) have been awarded. This is to ensure that the process of raising Fellows and full Members within the EAC may be initiated by the Academy’s Court of Electors. The Founding Fellowships are given to individuals deemed by the EAC to have attained high academic or professional standing within, without or while working for, the European Chiropractic profession.

Honorary Fellows will be raised, through recommendations received from the European profession. This will take place at the ECU General Assembly and will incur no annual fee for the individuals involved.

Any Associate Member is eligible to apply to the “Specialist Colleges” after demonstrating special interest and knowledge in this particular domain. Membership and Fellowship within a speciality will be available based, initially on the academic aspect of the application, then afterwards by academic portfolio (e.g. MEAC(Ortho), FEAC(Paed)) .
Fees will be in line with the EAC’s dues structure, as with any other Member or Fellow.
The Academy will have “Specialist Colleges” along the lines of:
- EAC College of Clinical Chiropractic
- EAC College of Sports Chiropractic
- EAC College of Orthopaedics
- EAC College of Paediatrics
- EAC College of Diagnostic Imaging
- EAC College of Educationalists
- EAC College of Researchers
- EAC College of Neurology (proposed)
- EAC College of Vetrinarian Chiropractic (proposed)
- applicants for proposed colleges will be placed in the College of Clinical Chiropractic until the new specialty college is established.

Some ECU member associations and/or EAC Members/Fellows have the ability to set up post-graduate colleges in their country of origin, which are directly linked to the European Academy of Chiropractic. Members and Fellows of these institutions would use the post nominal letters MEAC(Holland etc) and FEAC (Italy etc) depending on their country and level of membership. They must adhere strictly to the acceptance of only ECCE/CCEI accredited graduates.
